HighTone continues their "Heritage of the Blues" series with this hour-long set from former Muddy Waters' sideman, Pinetop Perkins. Recorded over two sessions in October of 1996 and '97, Pinetop is good form playing completely unassisted on acoustic and electric piano and delivering his weary, but affable vocals. While never regarded as the strongest singer in a long line of Mississippi-to-Chicago piano grinders, Perkins offers some solid playing throughout a mixed set of tried-and-true warhorses like Kansas City, Just A Little Bit, I Almost Lost My Mind, Everyday I Have The Blues, and Kidney Stew. Fine versions of How Long, Song For Sunnyland, Big Fat Mama, Take It Easy Baby, and Eddie Boyd's classic Five Long Years are also worth noting. This may not be an essential addition to CD shelves, but Perkins hands in an enjoyable set of piano blues just the same, and the bargain pricetag on this current series is easily affordable.
