Compilations such as this that are a true pleasure to listen to and review. Chock full of rare blues and rhythm & blues treats, Midnite Blues Party - Volume Two is a near 80-minute ride of small and large combos from the 1940s and 50s slicing through some prime material, and the focus is squarely on piano fronted bands although some outfits feature roaring horn sections. It's difficult to choose tracks to focus on since everything here is worthy of discussion, but Bonus Blues from the Bob Carter Trio and Achin' Heart Boogie from Clifford Bivens blaze ahead with distorted
guitar work that sounds as clear as crystal. Jack Surrell's Detroit Boogie is a stripped-down piano excursion of incredible quality but the gloves come off for Young Women's Advice by Sister Rock-A-Way with I.H. Smalley and his Rockateers with sizzling lyrics and Chocolate Williams and his Chocolateers doing Good Story Blues. Slim Tinsley and His Band offer a rumbling
606 Blues but the disc's most comical moments come during George Zimmerman and Thrills zipping through Ain't Got The Money To Pay For This Drink, a lament from the mid-1950s, and Buddy Tate's Good Morning Judge from 1947. Although there are no liner notes, the track listing provides original label information, the year of release, and geographic locations of the recordings. Visit www.electrofi.com for much more on this and other great releases. Essential listening.
