Jonny Lang's new disc is amply titled as it's been 5 years since Wander This World came out. While Lang is only 23 years old, he has shown amazing growth, not only a guitarist but as songwriter as well. Long Time Coming is a personal record where Jonny explores such topics as marriage, faith and self-examination. Unlike the young guitar virtuoso's first two albums- Smokin' and Lie To Me, which were each very blues influenced- this record has a more classic rock feel, chock-full of heavy guitar riffs and introspective lyrics with bluesy guitar solos. Like on Wander.., there are no shuffles or two-bar slow blues on Long Time Coming. The disc opens with a soulful hard driving rock song, 'Give Me Up Again' which showcases incredible guitar work and Lang's ever maturing powerful voice. The first single, Red Light, is an acoustic based tune which uses the moment spent at a stop light as a metaphorical occasion to reflect on life. He chooses two noble covers: Edgar Winter's 'Dying To Live' done in gospel fashion complete with a string section. Jonny adds a live version of Steve Wonder's 'Livin' For The City' that is performed with respect, admiration and accuracy for the original.
Like Susan Tedeschi, Kenny Wayne Shepard, and Papa Chubby, Jonny Lang is helping to rewrite the rules of blues with a fresh approach and new perspective. Long Time Coming might have taken awhile to record but it was certainly worth the wait.
