First of all, I want to make one thing clear; Jimmy Thackery is one hell of a blues guitarist. He is also not afraid to take chances outside the norm of traditional blues. When I toured regularly-about 250 days a year, playing the same damn songs over and over; I became bored and started adding different chops and runs that were not socially acceptable at the time. The bands I opened for or sat in with were top end acts-and very well known recording artists. This caused problems and I decided to choose my own acts as a solo artist. Naturally, I lost a lot of money playing my own music-but I was damn happy in my choice. Several weeks ago, I read a negative review of Jimmy's new "Guitar" disc. Well, to make a long story short, the person that wrote the review, isn't a musician and has no idea what he's talking about. This record is brilliant to say the least. There are 12 guitar instrumentals, plus three previously unreleased tracks; taken from the vaults of Blind Pig. The songs represent Jimmy's long standing career with Blind Pig. Check out the cover songs ""Roy's Blitz" (by Roy Buchanan), and "Apache" (by Jerry Lordan)-very cool indeed! Remember: Thackery played with the Nighthawks for 14 years-remember his guitar work on those early albums? I remember-damn straight; a definite stand out. Luther Allison told me that Jimmy Thackery was one of his favorite acts! I played on and off with Luther for over twenty years-and he was the most truthful man; I had ever met-especially, when we were fishing for Bluegills! That's when he bent my ear over Thackery's guitar work-true story. Pick this CD up and give it a spin-you won't be disappointed.
