CD Image It's been better than two decades since Mike Bloomfield lost his battle with narcotics before he hit the age of forty, but before exiting the stage for his final time, he undoubtedly left some remarkable guitar work behind. While his love and appreciation for blues are evidenced by lengthy associations with Big Joe Williams, Robert Nighthawk, Paul Butterfield, and others, Bloomfield wasn't afraid to experiment and step outside the parameters as he did with Al Kooper and the Electric Flag. The Ford Blues Band tip their hat to a hero with this tribute that combines storming guitar from Robben Ford, Chris Cain, and Volker Strifler, harp from Andy Just, and a rhythm section of Patrick Ford and Dewayne Pate. Strifler takes the vocal on Next Time You See Me while Robben handles the voice on four, and while his guitar is riveting on Got A Mind To Give Up Living, his voice has never been one of the more convincing ones. Chris Cain sounds incredibly deep on Killing My Love and solid throughout The Ones I Loved Are Gone, and Blues With A Feeling finds Andy Just in front of the microphone for a good effort. As is to be expected, the disc is perforated with exceptional guitar solos from a trio capable of chilling the senses at the drop of a hat, but the CD isn't necessarily a vehicle for grandstanding as much as it is to show just how much of a lasting effect Mike Bloomfield had on everyone here. While 18 tracks are present, five of them are short interview segments with Bloomfield explaining his blues roots, and the closing track, Blues For MB is a gripping instrumental with potent dynamics. www.bluerockit.com. 18 tracks, 55 minutes.
