Piano players are superbly represented on the third disc in Delmark's Saver Series, Masters Of The Boogie Piano, which collects a dozen excellent examples of earlier and highly influential artists and those who follow the footprints of the masters. Speckled Red set Delmark's blues catalog afoot in 1956 and his Wilkins Street Stomp is delightful, but the oldest tracks belong to Meade Lux Lewis with his pounding Bear Cat Crawl, Albert Ammons' tribute to Hersal Thomas on Hersal Blues, and Ammons and Lewis turn up on the closer in a thundering six-hand delight for Boogie Woogie Prayer with Pete Johnson, all dating to 1939. Johnson also hands in a fine 66 Stomp from 1947 backed by a small band, Roosevelt Sykes bellows the North Gulfport Boogie, Little Brother Montgomery leaves the towering Bass Key Boogie, and Robert McCoy delivers Bye Bye Baby. The disc also offers the talents of Sir Charles Thompson with his aptly titled A Boogie Woogie, Ken Saydak is featured on the rippling Clo Clo Boogie, and Steve Behr's Memories Of Albert Ammons is pure
fun. For anyone just finding out about the vast history of blues and its varied offshoots, these three budget-priced discs will prove an excellent starting point. www.delmark.com will offer more information on a wide selection of blues. Recommended.
