CD Image This could flat-out be the absolute best CD Bryan Lee has offered, and he's no stranger to recording with seven prior convictions tacked to his rap sheet, all on the Canadian Justin Time label. While he's capable of an over-the-edge, bombastic approach, with Duke Robillard in the producer's chair, Lee seems to have settled into his most authentic groove yet. Backed by Robillard's all-star cast, there's a wealth of styles and geographic locations touched upon, and while Bryan lets the sparks fly, he sounds more paced, focused, and unquestionably better suited to his accompanists. Horns are provided by Sax Gordon and Doug James, keyboard work from Bruce Katz, and a rhythm section with plenty of thump from Jesse Williams and Mark Teixeira on bass and drums, and Duke himself gets in on the party, but as rhythm guitarist only. From a N'awlins second-line bounce on Go On Fool, to the relaxed swing of Just Like A Fish, or the Dave Bartholomew drive in Bumpity Bump, Bryan Lee is right at home. He takes on You May from the Jody Williams book with reverence and aplomb and decides to let the devil out of the closet for the title cut, a ten-minute grinder with a smoldering and slow funk behind, under, and around him and his guitar. B.B. King gets a nod with the rustling Beautician Blues, and if that isn't enough, he closes the set with a torch song, Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You? For those familiar with both Bryan Lee and Duke Robillard, there's a similarity in range and phrasing that'll have you checking the track listing to see who's singing, but it's Lee from start to finish with a voice that has the perfect amount of grime and grit to please. Bryan Lee never forces anything; it simply sounds like he's having the time of his life on Six String Therapy, and with the gang he has in tow, he's sounding better than ever! www.justintime.com. 12 tracks, 55 minutes.
