"Keeping the Blues Alive Award" Achievement for Blues on the Internet Presented by The Blues Foundation
Bill Perry's earlier recordings for Pointblank garnered critical acclaim for the blues-rock guitar slinger and he returns with Crazy Kind Of Life, his sophomore effort for the Blind Pig label. Ten of the eleven tracks are originals from Perry's pen, or those of producer/sideman, Jimmy Vivino, who came into focus on Conan O'Brien's late night television show. Perry dishes out careening slide guitar on the kickoff, Trouble In The Shotgun and the gears clutch back for the title track, a slow roll with Vivino providing muscular piano. Too Hot rides a storming shuffle groove with Perry handing out an inspired vocal and blistering Telecaster licks, and Honey Pie, a slow, double-entendre shows the artist's use of restraint with some ringing tones and space. 500 Miles delivers another pounder where the sizzling bottleneck works off the familiar broomdusting theme while Junkie carries some fine songwriting from Perry, who has mined this territory on previous releases, and for Can't Buy My Love, Chris O'Leary chimes in with some solid harp. Richie Havens, a close friend and inspirational force in Perry's life, stops by for a heartfelt end to the disc with No Expectations, a lost gem from the catalog of Jagger and Richards. While more of a rocker with solid blues roots, Bill Perry serves up some heat that should please listeners who don't mind traversing the edgier side of the music. www.blindpigrecords.com. 11 tracks, 43 minutes.
