Longtime guitarist for the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion Judah Bauer has been applying his rock steady style to his solo-side project, 20 Miles since 1996. Inspiration for Bauer comes from nouveau Delta Blues and 1960's British Blues revivalists. With a revolving door of gifted musicians, 20 Mile have kept it fresh while capturing a cult following of dedicated fans. Unlike past projects which were raw and unrefined, Life Doesn't Rhyme is a bit more polished and radio friendly. This time, Brother Donovan Bauer sits out and is replaced by Joe Plummer on drums (best known for his work with Black Heart Procession and The Magic Magicians). The album was written in an amazing 3 week period but sounds well thought out and complete due is part to producers Liam Watson (The White Stripes, The Kills and Splash 4) along with his partner Ed Deegan. Stand out tracks are the neo-soul 'Gypsy Babe', the boogie-woogie 'Everybody Knows My Name', the two bar slow blues 'Ship Is Sinking Fast' and the Dylan-esque ballad 'Unfulfilled'. 20 Miles are currently on a North American tour and their jam-band style translates remarkably well to a live setting and is definitely worth checking out.
