This was a fine show. Cray had his usual band mates with him, featuring outstanding keyboardist, Jim Pugh, bassist Karl Sevaried, and drummer Kevin Hayes. The Memphis Horns, who played on his '97 release Sweet Potato Pie, were also there in fine form. The horns were Wayne Jackson on trumpet and Andrew Love on sax. Cray and band performed songs from his 15 plus years of prominence plus several new ones from his recent release, Take Your Shoes Off . "24-7 Man," a new tune, could be a hit in a pop oriented style, but this reviewer is not sure what radio format would play the song. Cray's guitar playing and vocals were outstanding in a mostly blues oriented vein throughout the night. His song writing has been intriguing to this reviewer since the mid '80s...lyrics that delve into a darker side of life, but his singing and great playing plus the backing of his fine band always have made listening to his recordings and live shows an uplifting experience.
