Blues Revue (Monthly in the US, except Jan/Feb, Jul/Aug)
Issue No. 59, July/August 2000
Tom Waits, certainly one of contemporary music's most difficult artists to categorize is featured in the summer issue. He talks about "bumps and cracks" in music and his work with Blues giants like Charlie Musselwhite and John Hammond. Gen Xer Ben Harper playing to college crowds and gathering a loyal following along the way delivers the Blues message in powerful performances that honor the genre's founding fathers. His original songs show this devotion to the roots and past masters such as Blind Willie McTell, Blind Willie Johnson, Bukka White, Taj Mahal and Robert Johnson, who he cites as having "an immeasurable influence". In a ten years after tribute to the loss of Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jim Kelton recounts a performance at a prison where Stevie's
show was one disaster after the next…except his ability to overcome it all and connect with his "captive" audience. Regular columns: T'aint Nobody's Business, Down In the Delta, Steady Rollin', We remember (Terrence Hollimon, Diamond Teeth Mary and Ervin Charles), Sales Charts, Reviews include: Cory Harris (recently turning in an unforgettable performance at Blues On the Range), Del Rey, B.B.
