Living Blues Magazine (Published bimonthly in the US)
Number #148, vol 31, number 6, (Nov/Dec 1999)
Though not touted as a "Special Issue", it is!! Living Blues contributors submit their respective favorites in an article entitled, "A Century of the Blues." think you know the Blues...read this. Deborah Coleman talks about her need to "venture out." Roy Gaines gets right to the point in a revealing article in which he talks about following in the entertainment tradition of "the Bone and Gatemouth." In the early 60's there was no one like Barbara Lynn, a left handed guitar player, gospel/soul influenced R&B performer, whose hit "You'll Lose a Good Thing" made history, proves she is still one of the best at what she does. Terry Evans, one of my all-time favorites, (listen again to his "Get Your Lies Straight" with Ry Cooder on a blistering slide from "Blues For Thought", Pointblank Records) talks about writing songs that bring people together. This months record reviews include: Luther Allison, George Stancell, Artie "Bluesboy" White, Jimmy "T99" Nelson, Jimmy Burns, Jimmy Johnson, Junior Kimbrough, Eddie Kirkland, Joe Louis Walker, Chris Thomas King, Charles Wilson and Weepin' Willie. Columns: Soul Stew, Short Takes, Radio Charts, Back Door, News, Obituaries, Classifieds, and all the places to look for what you need or want for you and those on your blues list. Have a Cool Yule!!

Blues Access (Published four times a year)
Issue #40, Winter 2000
Karl Bremer takes us on a painfully honest and revealing ride through the world of John Mooney in the cover article. John talks about his demons, triumphs and his years of playing with Son House, Professor Longhair and "having no choice but to leave" New Orleans...an amazing story! With all the recent press about Maxwell Street and efforts to save it from the (probable) wrecking ball, Michael Felten spends time with some of the folks who have been there since it was "the" place in Chicago for blues. Articles include a text/photo snapshot of some great
but not necessarily famous blues artists by John Rockwood, tributes to Katie , Frank Frost and Beau Jocque, and a profile of Crescent City native pianist Davell Crawford. Who, by many accounts totally rocked his performances at last years Jazz and Heritage Festival in a city known for keyboard masters ("Champion" Jack Dupree, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, Marcia Ball), CD reviews: Luther Allison, "Gatemouth" Brown, Deacon John, Taj Mahal & Toumani Diabate, Kid Ramos, "Big" Bill Morganfield, Janiva Magness, Jay McShann & Duke Robillard, Jimmy "T-99"
Nelson, Joe Louis Walker and many others. Since Blues Access is only published four times a year, every issue contains three months of relevant Blues information and is highly recommended for the serious and casual fan of the only music that really matters!.
