The Bayfront Festival grounds are made much more colorful by chair markers, a mixture of colorful items mounted on poles fans attach to their chairs to mark their spot so that their friends can find them, as well as to send a personal message. They are functional as well as symbolic, since finding your friends in a crowd of 20,000 can be daunting. Markers range from flags, windsocks, dolls, dummy heads, and stuffed animals to inflatables, stuffed animals, toy instruments, and pinwheels. Some interesting ones were the doll with no arms, inflatable flamingo, a black bra with red lights switched on at dusk, and a dynamic blue jay in flight. Fans put a lot of creativity into their chair markers and add to the festive atmosphere and visual spectacle with their efforts.
