The Senders are one of the most popular jump blues and R&B bands in the Twin Cities. Originally formed 12 years ago out of the backup band for Lynwood Slim, the three remaining original members, Dave "Cool Breeze" Brown (guitar and vocals), Mark Asche (piano) and Bill Black (bass) are joined by 5 other current members: Pete Masters (trombone), Bob Byers (alto and baritone saxophone), Scott Johnson (tenor saxophone), Steve Erickson (drums), and Charmin Michelle (vocals). Brown's musical career started more than 25 years ago where his T. Bone Walker influenced guitar and Wynonie Harris influenced vocals landed him a job backing up Mojo Buford. He went on to play with most of the blues musicians in the Twin Cities and in the mid '80's formed the band the Bee's Knees which was a precursor to the Senders. Long before the current swing dance craze swept through the area, the Senders were playing the same music that today ranks them as one of the premier swing and jump blues attractions in the state. The Senders play jump blues and R&B popularized by the likes of Louis Jordan, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Red Prysock, Roy Brown and Little Milton. Their powerful big band sound can literally raise the roof with a vengeance or Charmin Michelle's voice can seduce you as they slow the pace down with a sultry jazz number. This is potent stuff played with gritty authenticity and sizzling charm. When you are in the Twin Cities you can catch The Senders every Wednesday night at Famous Dave’s where for the past two and a half years they have held down this popular swing night gig. Or you can take them home with you by picking up a copy of their current Blue Loon CD, "Jumpin' Uptown."
