Originally a drummer, Mel Sando bought his first guitar when he decided he would rather be playing the blues of Lonnie Mack, Albert Collins and Roy Buchanan, instead the hard rock he had been playing. This led him on a musical journey back to the roots of the blues where he discovered artists like Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Robert Johnson and Son House. It was through the music of Son House that Mel found out what the blues was really all about. Starting out playing acoustic blues once a month at an open stage in Duluth, Mel soon began getting gigs at small venues around town playing his old National and Dobro guitars. With a repertoire that included the country blues of Robert Johnson, Bukka White and Son House as well as the more contemporary blues of Corey Harris and Keb’ Mo’, Mel landed a gig playing two nights a week at the Bayfront Blues Saloon in Superior, WI. It was at the Blues Saloon that Mel started hosting the weekly jam session which led to the formation of a band called the Delta Resonators in 1997. A two year stint as the house band followed and helped make the Delta Resonators one of the most popular blues bands in the Twin Ports area. Even with the popularity of the band Mel never let go of his love of country blues. With one album with the Delta Resonators (Juke Joint Junkie), and two solo acoustic albums under his belt (Walking Alone, 1998, and Travelin’ Mood, 2000), Mel now divides his time between gigs with the Delta Resonators and playing solo country acoustic blues.
