American HiP (with a capital P) was formed a year ago by a group of friends who coincidentally knew each other from their high school days at Duluth Denfeld. "We all knew each other and played in high school band together back then (except for Ryan Jaskey who was the only member who didn’t attend the same school)," relates guitarist Dustin Tessier. "Keith Fredrickson and I even played in a punk-rock band when we were 14." The members of American HiP include Dustin Tessier (lead and rhythm guitar), Keith Fredrickson (bass), Dan Anderson (piano), Sam Maida (drums), Matt Boder (lead and rhythm guitar), and Ryan Jaskey (percussion). They all share lead vocal duties as American HiP plays its way through a variety of more obscure, non-mainstream rock, blues and American roots music with wide-ranging influences that reach from the Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa, and Jimi Hendrix to Myles Davis, Muddy Waters and even Randy Anderson of the local band Azure duJour. According to Tessier the band’s name was originally thought up a few years ago by band member Matt Boder as a possibility for another group he was in at the time. The name was never used so when this current band was looking for a name, they liked the sound and decided to use it. American HiP currently plays every Tuesday night at the NorShore Theatre in Duluth.
