Marcia Ball, Irma Thomas, Tracy Nelson
"Sing It!" CD Review
Rounder CD 2152, 13 tracks, 49 minutes

This CD is one of the surprises of the year. It is the vocal counterpart to two previous award winning albums featuring the guitar and harmonica. "Showdown" had the brilliant guitar sounds of Albert Collins, Robert Cray and Johnny Clyde Copeland and "Harp Attack" featured James Cotton, Junior Wells, Carey Bell and Billy Branch on harmonica. Now "Sing It!" featuring the three giant blues/R&B voices of Marcia Ball, Irma Thomas and Tracy Nelson completes the trilogy.

What makes this such a special album, besides the strong song selection (Gary Nicholson, Steve Cropper, Joe Tex, Sarah Brown and Dan Penn), the excellent musicianship, and the engaging solos by these three powerhouse vocalists, is the way they sing together. The harmonies are brilliant. They sound so good you would never know this was the first time they had performed together.

The liner notes comment on how much fun they had making this album "we are all fans of each other's music," Irma Thomas said, "everything fell right into place - and we had a blast in the process." Which is what you will have listening to this super album. After listening to the album I played it where I knew my wife would hear it. And just as I expected, when she walked into the room the first thing she said was "what CD is that, it's really good!" And that sums it up, it IS really good!
