There are quiet moments where your thoughts drift either forward, or back in time. Everyone goes through the same thought process; it’s part of our nature, something we can’t deny. My head seems to drift into the early ‘60s. Driving along country roads and listening to late night radio out of the South. It was a great turn-on to R&B—stuff that you wouldn’t normally catch on your local station. And of course, Barbara Lynn was truly amazing to all of us. A young girl with a guitar no less,
and playing it left handed! The hit single that carried over was her 1962 debut, "You’ll Lose A Good Thing Baby." They were still playing it strong in ‘65, and everyone was digging "Oh Baby (We’ve Got A Good Thing Goin’)," another Lynn original that the Stones covered. Those were the
years of innocence, and Viet Nam was a million miles away from our dreams of finding that special someone. And now, Barbara hits us with her debut CD from Antones. The voice and the grooves are all in check. But this is the year of change, and new deliveries in music. On this outing, her son joins in with rap vocals and a little hip-hop, adding a little flair. Most people think of rap as a recent phenomena, but the actual roots of the genre go back to the beginning of the Twentieth Century. But check out track five (worth the price of the CD)—pure Gulf Coast, and very bluesy. And track seven is a total groove with Lynn tickling the guitar strings as she falls into pure soul. My personal fav from this session is track ten: "Lynn’s Blues." I could spend a night hitting replay—or in my car, on a lonely road to nowhere. Once again, Barbara Lynn sends a hot message...dig it!
