One day, while driving, I heard on the radio Trouble In Mind sung by a woman. At first I thought it could have been a new Susan Tedeschi release that I must have overlooked. Soon it was clear - I was listening to a Kelly Richey live recording. How was it possible that I had not heard of such a vocalist before! I went to all possible record stores - nothing. Soon I flew to the US - and here again - nothing. I visited a few NY Tower Records, Virgin and Border Stores and found no trace of Kelly Richey. Neither was I successful in other places (and I traveled through 10 states).
At last when I came back to NY I went to the "Largest Jazz & Blues Shop In The World" on Down Manhattan near the City Hall Park. There I learnt that she already made three CDs and was preparing a new one.
She was present on blues scene for 7 years since the time she started to perform with Lonnie Mack. The live album was compiled from her club concerts in Florida, Ohio and Kentucky in 1998. Kentucky is her home state and she is described as "exploding mixture of SRV, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt influences". That's enough!
Already after the first sounds you can feel that she has been given a rare talent. And she's playing only with a bass player and a drummer which, however, seems enough if you have someone like Kelly Richey in front. Half of the pieces are original compositions, the remaining ones are well known standards. Nevertheless, they sound fresh as if you heard them for the first time. And that's what's it all about. Remember the name: KELLY RICHEY!
