I know it's a little early in regards to picking the album of the year. Well, here's my pick -- this one! For an older generation of musicians and fans, Don Nix was a sub-underground figure. An excellent composer and producer at Stax Records (I can't begin to count, how many musicians dipped into the Stax vaults for cover songs); Don was also a recording artist, and a fine one, I might add. Check out your record collection and I'm quite sure you'll find Don's name in the credits; be it rock or blues. He wrote six of the songs for Albert King's "Lovejoy" album. Jerry Gordon provides a thorough history of Don's career in the liner notes -- very crucial for the younger fans of roots rock and blues. On this record, Nix picked an all-star cast of players to accompany the band: Bonnie Bramlett, Steve Cropper, Audley Freed, Bobby Manuel, Brian May, John Mayall, Max Middleton, Dan Penn, Billy Lee Riley (Billy worked for Sun Records, and plays a mean guitar!), Leslie West (From Mountain -- another guitar wizard!), Tony Joe White (total swamp! Remember the song "Polk Salad Annie?!"), and the great Bobby Whitlock. Normally, I like to cover each song individually, however, each and every track burns like a wild fire out of hell! I will say this much, the first song: "Black Cat Moan" is worth the price of the CD!
