This one is for the blues purists and the electric-charged at heart. Michael Burks is one of the most exciting young bluesmen in the ever-growing-coral. His guitar is a very cool "Flying V Gibson"—something you don't see to often on the circuit anymore. I guess it really don't matter that much as far as guitar choice goes; it's all in the hands of the beholder. What I'm trying to say is this: Burks goes beyond the limits with an unparalleled ax attack. His bends and lightening fast solos don't come from a book. You see, this guy has a soul and doesn't need a notepad to prove he's for real. Born in Milwaukee in 1957, Burks was brought up in a blues laced landscape. The Burks' family roots trace back to Arkansas, where his grandfather played Delta-influenced blues guitar on an acoustic. Michael's father (Frederick) played bass in a blues band, and taught his son guitar. After an industrial accident to his hand, Frederick, relocated back to Arkansas. With his family's help, they built a blues club. Michael worked a variety of jobs, and honed his craft playing in the club. This took place in the early 70s. In reality, Michael Burks has had years of experience playing the blues. And with only one record to his credit—a well-received indie recording. Now, he has found a home with Alligator Records. I dislike talking about awards and such. But in my heart, I truly believe that this wonderful CD deserves a W.C Handy, and then some. There are no flaws whatsoever. From track #1 to track #12, Burks delivers the true spirit of the blues. My highest recommendations.
