I share the same philosophy or approach to the blues, and music in general, as Bill Perry. He had his heroes and was influenced by them: Albert Collins, B.B., and Freddie King. And he knew in his heart, that he would have to go in different directions; find his own sound and evolve. Bill Perry has done that-in a big way, and it shows in his music. Why be just another copycat? In my younger days, I had the opportunity of opening for Albert Collins on several occasions (not to mention the intense hangovers from the ensuing parties that took place!). Of course, I learned some cool licks, but change is the key to growth. As a performer, you give and you take; the same goes with writing. If you learn something that works; make some alterations and changes-look for something new. Perry's growth as a performer is without question, brilliant. On this debut with Blind Pig, he really struts his stuff. I couldn't think of a more appropriate title for an album than "Fire It Up!" Perry nails you with power E chords and plenty of rhythm from the very first track: "Itchin' For It. The six originals are by far my favorites on this eleven track attack. The guitar opening on track #2: "Clean Thing" builds up to a blitz, and the strong vocals (lyrics included) are of the direct hit variety. The following number: "Fire It Up," complete with background vocals, is the type of song you want to hear as an opener in your favorite watering hole-or living room (shake that thing!). Track #4: "Pressure" clocks in at 4:19-very tough with the appropriate edge, included. The guitar work is beyond what you'd expect-and that's good. The mix of lightening and calm is measured to exact proportions. If you're a guitar player, try and take on Perry's "G & L Jump" on track #8! Talk about blisters. Man, its like Charlie Parker playing guitar at warp speed! This disc is a winner.
