It was raining hard on the Saturday before Easter and I was a bit surprised to see as many people s I did at this concert. The crowd was still small by concert standards, but those in attendance were very enthusiastic. Indigenous has that effect on their fans.

This particula4 show was in a large gymnasium and the acoustics were in a word - terrible. Listeners crowded near the front and sides of the stage area to minimize the echo in their ear and to pick up the sound from the monitors. Even so, Indigenous put on a good performance.

Mato Nanji is the focal center of the group. His guitar work is straight from the Stevie ray Vaughan - Jimi Hendrix school with a seminar from Jeff Beck thrown in. He is an impressive, entertaining player - expressive and in complete control on stage.

Another signature of Indigenous is the percussion section with both congas and drums locked in with the bass. The sound is very solid and provides tremendous support for Matte's tonal paintings. Indigenous definitely has a loyal following. The crowd howled with each applause. I was standing near the stage when I was approached by a young man wearing a goatee who apparently deduced I was a reporter or music scout, etc. Screaming to be heard, he said with complete conviction, "If they don't make it, then I hate society! Really, man, I'll hate society!"
