Dave Hole started off on a strong note by playing my favorite cut "Out Of Here," from his new CD "Ticket To Chicago." From Perth, Australia, Dave Hole plays slide guitar with reckless abandon. Intense, relentless, explosive, all describe his unusual slide guitar playing. He uses an overhand slide technique, the result of a little finger injury on his left hand when he was learning how to play the slide guitar - he had to improvise and the sound he came up with was truly amazing. His slide playing is firmly rooted in the classic 1950’s Elmore James/Muddy Waters/Earl Hooker school.

On some of his blistering numbers he is like Elmore James on speed. His non-slide guitar playing is just as impressive -- pure classic Chicago blues played on a hollow bodied Gibson.

This was Dave’s first trip back to the Blues Saloon since 1995. He is touring the states this fall on the release of his new Alligator CD "Ticket To Chicago," which features some great songs and an impressive line up of seasoned Chicago musicians. One of the slower songs he performed at the Blues Saloon was "My Bird Won’t Sing," a slow burning blues played with remarkable taste, tone and enthusiasm.

Some of his slower songs are simmering classics just waiting to boil over from his expressive playing. He has an ability to play melodic slide phrases with embellishments that are truly amazing. He dedicated a super song "I Found Love," from his "Steel On Steel," album to the late Luther Allison.

The dance floor was packed, the house was full and Dave Hole’s ferocious performance left everyone in a pretty good mood. I only wish he toured the states more often.
